C.H.I.P. PROGRAM

Some of you may have already heard of CHIP (Coronary Health Improvement Project) through personal experience or through friends. This is a four week volunteer run program which monitors weight, blood lipid profile (Cholesterol, etc.) and blood sugar while the participants are learning about lifestyle changes which can have a profound effect on their health. Some of the issues involved include the management of weight, blood sugar & cholesterol. These have an effect in diminishing the risks of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and cancer. This is not done by a diet per se. It involves lifestyle changes which have been inherent in the Adventist health message. It is an extension of this message, incorporating modern science and uses a program which has been used successfully in business, schools, hospitals and church sponsored groups. Over 40,000 people have gone through the CHIP program.

What does this mean specifically to our community?

In our new facility we will have an opportunity to offer the CHIP program to the community. Palomar Pomerado Health has identified 9 health issues which need to be addressed. Five of these - diabetes (9,882) individuals), overweight or obesity (71,280 adults), coronary heart disease (7,530 individuals), sedentary death syndrome 60% of the population and 745 new cases of cancer each year in Escondido - could be addressed if CHIP were to be made available to the community at large.

Since we decided to become involved in CHIP we have had 10 people trained for giving the full CHIP program and in four sessions 45 people have gone through the Mico-CHIP sessions.

We are now looking forward to the time when we move into our new church facility and will be able to offer our first full CHIP program.
